If you’re looking to hire a brand or website designer, you already know how overwhelming the search can be. Whether you’re rebranding your business or building a new digital presence from scratch, the person you choose can make—or break—your brand experience.
As a brand strategist, messaging & positioning pro, and designer myself, here’s what I tell every prospect during our consult calls to help them make a confident, informed decision (whether or not they work with me).
At Minimum? Speak to at Least 3 Aligned Designers
I always encourage potential clients to speak with at least three designers. Why? Because this isn’t just about who’s most talented—it’s about who’s the right fit for you.
Here’s what to look for:
1. Review Their Portfolio
The best way to get a feel for a designer’s aesthetic and capabilities is by reviewing their past work. A strong portfolio tells you:
What kind of clients they typically work with
Their design versatility
Whether their style resonates with your brand vision
✨ Tip: If you’re drawn to my work, it’s likely because the strategy and design behind it speak to your goals. Visual storytelling matters.
2. Ask for Testimonials and Case Studies
Great designers have receipts—and I don’t just mean pretty pictures.
Ask for:
Testimonials from past clients
Case studies with tangible results
References you can actually speak with
Bonus points for video testimonials and client feedback that shows real transformation.
🎞️ I’ve added video testimonials to make it easy for future clients to hear real success stories straight from those I’ve worked with. Here’s a sample
3. Evaluate Their Expertise and Process
Not all “experts” are created equal.
Look for a designer who:
Listens deeply and understands your goals
Offers a clear, strategic process with checkpoints
Keeps communication open and organized throughout the project
You want someone who brings both creativity and clarity. Someone who can make the process feel collaborative, not chaotic.
🛠️ In my rebrand process, I highlight key client benchmarks so you’re never left guessing. No surprises. Just partnership.
Bonus: What Would You Add?
If you’ve gone through a rebrand or website redesign before, what helped you find the right designer? What do you wish you’d known sooner?
